# A Day Trip to Taboga Island: Panama City’s Closest Island Escape

[Reside Panama](https://www.residepanama.com/en/reside-panama-blog/author/reside-panama)

Just 30 minutes by ferry from Panama City, Taboga Island—known as the “Island of Flowers”—offers a tranquil retreat with sandy beaches, colorful streets, and a rich history. Whether you're seeking a quick beach getaway or a leisurely day exploring a charming island village, Taboga makes for an ideal day trip.

### Getting There: Fast and Easy from Amador

The most popular way to reach Taboga is via the Taboga Express Fast Ferry, which departs from the Fuerte Amador Mall on the Amador Causeway. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. Ferries run multiple times daily, with departures from Panama City at 8:00 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:00 AM, and 3:00 PM on weekdays, and additional departures at 4:30 PM on weekends and holidays. Return trips from Taboga Island are scheduled at 8:45 AM, 10:15 AM, 2:30 PM, and 4:00 PM on weekdays, with an extra 5:00 PM departure on weekends and holidays .

Tickets can be purchased online or at the ferry terminal. It's advisable to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure to ensure a smooth boarding process.

### What to Do on Taboga Island

Once on the island, a variety of activities await:

- **Relax on the Beach**: Taboga boasts two main beaches—Playa Honda and Playa Restinga—both offering golden sands and calm waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing.
- **Explore the Village**: Stroll through the colorful streets of the island’s main village, where you can visit the Church of San Pedro, considered one of the oldest churches in the Western Hemisphere, dating back to 1524.
- **Hike to Cerro de la Cruz**: For panoramic views of the island and surrounding waters, hike up to Cerro de la Cruz, a hill topped with a large cross.
- **Enjoy Local Cuisine**: Sample fresh seafood and Panamanian dishes at local eateries such as Calaloo Beach, Fishbar & Grill, and Restaurante Playa Honda.

### Tips for Your Trip

- **Bring Essentials**: Pack sunscreen, a hat, swimwear, and comfortable walking shoes.
- **Cash is King**: While some establishments may accept cards, it's best to bring cash, as there are no ATMs on the island.
- **Stay Hydrated**: Carry water, especially if you plan to hike or spend extended time in the sun.

**Experience the charm of Taboga Island—a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration just a short ferry ride from Panama City.**
