As of March 15, 2023, Tocumen International Airport features its metro station,  part of the Line 2 extension, also known as the "El Ramal" branch. This modern, elevated station connects you directly to the heart of the city via a smooth interchange.

How to ride into the city:

  1. After collecting your bags, follow the airport signs to the inter-terminal shuttle and the airport metro entrance.

  2. Board the branch train at Aeropuerto station → ride 1 stop to Corredor Sur.

  3. Transfer at Corredor Sur to the main Line 2 train heading west toward San Miguelito.

  4. At San Miguelito, transfer to Line 1 to reach downtown, Albrook, or other westbound destinations.

Fares & Payment:

  • Line 2 only: $0.50

  • Line 1 only: $0.35

  • Both lines (airport to downtown): $0.85 total. You can pay with a Metro prepaid card (cost $2, recharge at stations), or directly with contactless debit/credit cards, or Apple/Google Pay.

Service Hours:

If you're in Panama City—say, at San Miguelito, Albrook, or Cincuentenario—you can catch the metro to the airport:

  1. Ride Line 1 or Line 2 until you reach San Miguelito (if starting on Line 1).

  2. Transfer to Line 2 toward Nuevo Tocumen/Corredor Sur.

  3. At Corredor Sur, switch to the airport branch to ride directly to Aeropuerto station.

Tap your Metro card or contactless bank/mobile card at every station. For real-time arrival information, check the official Metro de Panamá website or their station kiosks.

Luggage & Tips

  • Luggage is permitted (up to ~100 × 75 × 65 cm); perfect for most suitcases.

  • No mask mandate currently in place—but you’re free to wear one for your comfort.

  • Pay attention to early train times on Sundays and holidays—start service is delayed until 7 a.m., so plan accordingly for early flights.

Why It’s a Great Option

  • Economical: Just $0.85 from airport to downtown—significantly cheaper than a taxi or ride-share.

  • Reliable & Fast: Trains come every ~10 minutes, avoiding traffic delays.

  • Comfortable: Air-conditioned, safe, and clean throughout.

  • Integrated Connection: Seamlessly connects with Panama’s wider metro network.

Final Tips

  • Ensure arrival/departure times fall within metro operating hours.

  • If catching a pre‑morning flight, consider staying in a hotel near the airport or ensure departure after service starts.

  • Always have some small cash handy in case your contactless card doesn't work.

Using the metro at Tocumen Airport is now safer, faster, and more affordable than ever. It’s an excellent choice for expats and travelers—just follow the transfers from Aeropuerto → Corredor Sur → San Miguelito → downtown, and you're good to go!
