# Panama's Fiestas Patrias 2026: 7 Ways Expats Can Celebrate the Month of the Homeland

[Evelyne Samaniego](https://www.residepanama.com/en/reside-panama-blog/author/evelyne-samaniego)

If you moved to Panama this year, November will surprise you. Drums echo from school courtyards weeks in advance, flags appear on every balcony, and the whole country slows down to celebrate its independence. Panamanians call it *el Mes de la Patria*, the Month of the Homeland.

For expats, it is one of the best times of the year to understand Panamanian culture up close. It is also a month when banks close, streets shut down and plans need a little extra thought. Here is what to expect in 2026 and seven ways to enjoy it like a local.

## **Key Dates of Fiestas Patrias 2026**

Panama celebrates two independences: from Colombia in 1903 and from Spain in 1821. That is why the holidays are spread across the whole month. These are the dates to keep on your calendar this year, according to the [official 2026 holiday calendar published by La Estrella de Panamá](https://www.laestrella.com.pa/panama/nacional/calendario-oficial-de-dias-festivos-en-panama-para-2026-NM18273259).

| Date | Holiday | What it marks |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tue, Nov 3 | Separation of Panama from Colombia | The biggest day: parades in every town |
| Wed, Nov 4 | Día de los Símbolos Patrios (Flag Day) | Celebrates the flag, anthem and coat of arms; second day of parades |
| Thu, Nov 5 | Consolidation of the Separation | Celebrated above all in Colón |
| Tue, Nov 10 | First Cry of Independence | Born in La Villa de Los Santos in 1821 |
| Sat, Nov 28 | Independence from Spain | Closes the month of celebrations |

*Good to know:* just before the celebrations, November 2 is Día de los Difuntos (All Souls' Day), a national day of mourning. It is not part of Fiestas Patrias, but public offices close in the afternoon.

Some districts also close public offices for their own local independence days, such as Santiago de Veraguas on November 9 and Pedasí's Santa Catalina on November 25.

## **7 Ways to Celebrate Fiestas Patrias as an Expat**

### **1. Watch the parades in Casco Antiguo or Vía España**

The parades on November 3 and 4 are the heart of the celebrations. In Panama City, school and independent marching bands follow two routes: one through Casco Antiguo and Cinta Costera, and one along Vía España, from Iglesia del Carmen to the main Caja de Ahorros building. Dozens of bands take part each day, and this year bands from Costa Rica join as guests on November 4 ([Telemetro](https://www.telemetro.com/c6096859)).

Arrive early to find a good spot in the shade. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen, and leave valuables at home. If you go with children, put a card with your phone number in their pocket.

### **2. Wear red, white and blue**

You will see the flag colors everywhere: on clothes, cars, buildings and storefronts. Joining in is a simple way to show respect for your new home, and locals notice and appreciate it.

Look out for the *pollera*, Panama's national dress, and the *montuno*, the traditional men's outfit. Many bands and folk groups wear them in the parades. If you hang a flag on your balcony, treat it with care: Panamanians take their national symbols seriously.

### **3. Try the street food**

Vendors line the parade routes with traditional snacks. Try *carimañolas* (yuca fritters filled with meat), *empanadas*, *hojaldras* (fried dough), a *raspao* (shaved ice with syrup and condensed milk) or a cold *chicheme*, a sweet corn drink. Health authorities inspect food stalls during the parades, so look for vendors with visible permits.

### **4. Travel to the interior**

Some of the most authentic celebrations happen outside the capital. La Villa de Los Santos commemorates the First Cry of Independence on November 10, in the town where it happened in 1821. Colón hosts its own big celebration on November 5.

If you would rather rest, the long weekends are perfect for the beach or the mountains. Just book early: hotels and rentals fill up fast in November.

### **5. Plan your week around the closures**

Banks close on November 3, 4 and 5, and some branches also close on November 10 and 28. Public offices close from 1:00 p.m. on November 2 and on November 4, 5 and 10 ([Telemetro](https://www.telemetro.com/nacionales/que-estara-abierto-y-cerrado-los-dias-feriados-panama-n6097051/amp)). Road closures for the parades start at 6:00 a.m., and Metro and MetroBus routes may change.

Run your errands, banking and grocery shopping before the holidays. On parade days, avoid driving near the routes and use the Metro when possible.

### **6. Learn the history behind the celebrations**

Knowing why Panamanians celebrate makes the experience much richer. On November 3, 1903, Panama separated from Colombia. On November 28, 1821, it declared independence from Spain. Ask your Panamanian neighbors or coworkers what the month means to them; most will be happy to share their stories.

### **7. Celebrate with solidarity**

This year's celebrations come after the strong earthquake that hit Panama in October. Some districts, including Santiago in Veraguas and Penonomé in Coclé, cancelled or suspended their November parades because of the damage ([Telemetro](https://www.telemetro.com/c6096859)).

Before you travel to the interior, check the local agenda. If you can, support the relief efforts for the affected communities. It is a meaningful way to be part of the country you now call home.

## **Quick Etiquette Tips for the Month of the Homeland**

- **Stand for the national anthem.** If it plays at an event or ceremony, stand up and remove your hat, just as locals do.
- **Respect the flag.** Don't let it touch the ground, and take it down if it gets worn or faded.
- **Skip the drinks on the parade route.** Parades are family events full of students, and public drinking near the routes is usually restricted. Check your municipality's announcements before you go.
- **Be patient.** Traffic, crowds and closures are part of the experience. Plan extra time for everything you do this month.

## **What This Means If You're...**

**A new expat in Panama:** This is your chance to meet your neighbors and see Panamanian pride at its best. Go to at least one parade, try the food and ask locals about the history. It is one of the fastest ways to feel at home.

**Planning to move or invest in Panama:** November is a good time to visit if you want to see daily life beyond the tourist spots. Just keep in mind that banks, notaries and public offices close on several days, so don't schedule paperwork, property visits or closings during the holiday weeks.

**A retiree or long-term resident:** If crowds aren't your thing, the long weekends are a good excuse to explore a quieter part of the country. Book your trip early, because Panamanian families travel too.
